The Great Sphinx of Giza, a colossal limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human, located on the Giza Plateau on the western bank of the Nile River in Egypt, continues to astonish the world. Traditionally regarded as a depiction of Pharaoh Khafre, the sculpture has intrigued archaeologists and scholars for centuries.
Measuring an impressive 73.5 meters in length, 19.3 meters in width, and 20.2 meters in height, it is the largest monolithic statue on the planet and also the oldest known monumental sculpture. It is believed to have been carved during the reign of Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BCE), in Egypt’s Old Kingdom.
Now, a team of scientists is announcing the detection of enormous underground chambers beneath the Sphinx, revealed through technologies such as ground-penetrating radar and muon radiography. These findings reignite debates about the true purpose of the monument and raise new questions about potential hidden structures yet to be explored.
According to a group of Italian researchers—who had already attracted attention earlier this year by suggesting the existence of hidden structures beneath the Pyramid of Khafre—they now claim to have detected a vast vertical shaft and two chambers located beneath the Sphinx.
These revelations were presented at the recent Cosmic Summit held in North Carolina—an event known for exploring alternative theories about ancient history. While mainstream archaeologists have criticized the work as speculative and lacking scientific rigor, the researchers involved insist the data points to something extraordinary.
Filippo Biondi, a radar technology expert at the University of Strathclyde (Scotland) and co-author of the study, told DailyMail.com that the findings “strongly support the hypothesis that the Giza Plateau hides a vast underground complex—possibly evidence of a long-forgotten subterranean city.”
Radar images revealed a large vertical shaft surrounded by a spiral staircase descending from the base of the Sphinx into two square chambers, one located approximately 600 meters below the surface, and another at about 1,200 meters.
Egyptologist Armando Mei, also involved in the research, stated that similar underground features were detected beneath all three main pyramids, suggesting a deliberately unified architectural plan.
According to Mei, “these findings indicate that the Giza Plateau was designed long before the dynastic period, possibly around 36,400 BCE, as my research suggests.”
If confirmed, these discoveries could drastically reshape our understanding of Ancient Egyptian history—challenging the long-standing belief that the pyramids were built solely as royal tombs and instead pointing to a lost civilization with highly advanced engineering knowledge.

The iconic Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx have long been celebrated as wonders of ancient engineering. Built around 4,500 years ago with impressive precision and scale, these structures continue to baffle experts to this day.
However, recent studies are challenging this traditional timeline. Researchers now suggest that these legendary monuments may have been built on top of much older underground structures — possibly dating back tens of thousands of years before the known Egyptian civilization.
The first major revelation came in March, when the team announced the discovery of four massive shafts and chambers beneath the Pyramid of Khafre, detected using cutting-edge sonar technology.
The scientists used SAR Doppler tomography—a satellite radar-based technique capable of detecting subtle seismic movements. By analyzing the reflection patterns and timing of these signals, they were able to generate 3D maps that reveal hidden underground structures. Some of these findings have already been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
However, the latest work led by Corrado Malanga of the University of Pisa, in collaboration with Filippo Biondi and Armando Mei, has not yet undergone formal scientific peer review. The team plans to submit their study for publication in 2026.
“Our geophysical scans beneath the Great Sphinx revealed pillar-like formations strikingly similar to those found beneath the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure,” Biondi explained.
“Even more compelling, our tomographic imaging revealed two large chambers located nearly 2,000 feet below the surface.”

At 1.1km lays a tunnel grid resembling a buried city

Two enormous underground chambers, each measuring approximately 40 by 40 meters, appear to be connected by a vertical shaft, according to the team’s latest findings.
Radar analysis also indicates the presence of a complex network of hidden structures beneath the surface, suggesting the possibility of a vast underground city — potentially as extensive as the entire Giza Plateau.
Egyptologist Armando Mei explains that their theory of a lost city is based on ancient Egyptian texts, particularly Chapter 149 of the Book of the Dead, which makes cryptic references to a mysterious city beneath the pyramids. One illustration linked to the chapter depicts the so-called “14 residences of the city of the dead.”
“The text describes specific chambers and even some of the inhabitants of that city. That’s why we believe it may be Amenti, the realm of the dead, as described in the ancient writings,” Mei said.
“Of course, we still need to verify it, but we believe this could be the case, especially since the pyramids are located exactly where the texts indicate.”
According to those writings, the pyramids were built deliberately atop the hidden city, effectively sealing off its entrance and protecting its secrets.
Filippo Biondi, radar technology specialist and co-author of the study, added that the mysterious chambers found over 1,200 meters beneath the pyramids could be linked to the legendary Hall of Records.
This mythical chamber, according to ancient tradition, is said to lie hidden beneath either the Great Pyramid or the Sphinx, and to contain the lost wisdom of ancient civilizations — a long-lost archive of ancestral knowledge that remains shrouded in mystery to this day.

Despite enduring fascination, there is no solid evidence to prove the existence of the Hall of Records.
The team suggests that the complex was originally built by an advanced civilization, which was destroyed about 12,000 years ago by a “divine flood” triggered by an asteroid impact.
According to this theory, the pyramids are the only surviving “mega-structure” of that ancient society.
Alternative historians, such as Graham Hancock — a frequent guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast — have long argued that a sophisticated prehistoric civilization was wiped out by a global cataclysm, possibly caused by a comet impact.

Despite ongoing interest, there is no concrete evidence confirming the existence of the Hall of Records.

This theory holds that catastrophic floods and upheavals erased most traces of this civilization, while the survivors passed on critical knowledge of astronomy, engineering, and sacred architecture to later cultures like the ancient Egyptians.
Currently, the researchers are seeking permission from Egyptian authorities to begin excavations beneath the Giza Plateau and put their findings to the test, potentially rewriting human history.
“We have that right. Humanity has the right to know who we truly are, because, until now, that remains unknown,” said Biondi.
